Elo's Touch Technology Behind World's First Digital Music Download for Cash
Elo TouchSystems, Inc. has announced it provides the touchscreen technology for Inspired Broadcast Networks' (Inspired's) itbox terminals and networked jukeboxes that will deliver digital music downloads to the 70% of UK consumers who prefer cash to credit cards. Inspired is adding music download capabilities to its network of 7000 itbox terminals and 800 networked jukeboxes and recently launched its Urban Digital Vending concept that is based on broadband technology from BT and was developed in conjunction with Entertainment UK, the music wholesale division of Woolworths Group. Terminals with the new capability will enable consumers to purchase music using cash or a credit card. The service, launched with the slogan "digital life for everyone" allows consumers to download music to many devices from basic mobile phones to high-end music players. Inspired's terminals are a familiar sight in pubs and the company has also embedded the technology into vending machines and music listening posts. The terminals are built around touchscreen technology from Elo TouchSystems. Mike Sigona, Elo TouchSystems' Europe marketing manager said, "Inspired's digital vending concept is yet more evidence of the power of touch technology in public access applications. Consumers are becoming increasingly familiar with touch technology as it appears in more and more public locations. From gaming applications in bars, POS systems in restaurants through kiosks in shops to downloading music in major high street stores, touch is a universally enabling technology that offers userfriendly access to sophisticated computer and online resources. Elo TouchSystems, as the original inventor of the touchscreen, remains at the forefront of this technology and continues to deliver reliable, durable and costeffective solutions across a wide spectrum of industries."

"Touch is well established as the enabling technology of the 21st century allowing average citizens to easily navigate their way around increasingly complex computer and on-line resources. Touch makes it easy for computer system designers to guide users through seemingly difficult transactions as the concept of 'touch here' is universally recognised by even the most inexperienced operator," said Mr Sigona. "Developed for gaming applications, our surface wave touchscreen technology has a precise touch performance that never needs recalibration. Its pure glass construction yields the best possible optics with higher light transmission and less reflection than other touch technologies that use metallic coatings, wires or plastic layers. Notably, Elo's surface wave touch technology does not alter the colours of the original picture." Research by Elo in the USA earlier this year and featured on CNN, shows that almost 90 percent of young Americans aged 18 to 34 expect touchscreens to become the standard way of performing tasks such as airport check-in, purchasing train tickets and self checkout at the supermarket in the near future. The same research revealed that the technology is rapidly expanding into many other industries such as healthcare (signing in at a hospital or doctor's office and patient bedside entertainment/communication systems), automotive navigation and in-car entertainment systems), and hotel (self check-in). "With Inspired adding digital vending capabilities to its extensive network of itbox gaming terminals and jukeboxes, touch technology is about to be experienced by a whole new category of users who will appreciate the simplicity it brings to our increasingly complicated digital lifestyles," Mr Sigona said.
