Soul Calibur is a 3D fighting game, and the follow-up to breakthrough Soul Edge (1995). The game features an 8-way movement system that allows a player's character to move in and out of the screen to dodge and attack opponents.

There is also a time release system for both characters and extra weapons and arenas in which to fight. Power-up by using a soul charge and batter your opponent into submission with various weapons, or toss them out of the ring.

The majority of the characters present in Soul Edge make a return, and a large number of new characters are also introduced leading to a greatly expanded roster. Returning characters are Mitsurugi, Taki, Voldo, Sophita, Cervantes, Rock, Siegfried, Hwang, and Seong Mina. New characters include Ivy, Maxi, Kilik, Nightmare, Astaroth, Xianghua, Lizardman, and Yoshimitsu from the Tekken series.
