The first game in the long-running Street Fighter series. Modes available are Arcade mode, where the player competes in a series of one-on-one matches against a series of computer-controlled opponents; and Versus Mode, where the player competes in a single match against another player.
The game was available with two very different control options. The game first shipped as a non-JAMMA custom upright, with the punch and kick actions controlled by two large mechatronic pads which the player must physically hit. These were later replaced with an array of six attack buttons - three punch buttons and three kick buttons of different speed and strength (Light, Medium and Heavy).
Ken and Ryu are the only playable characters. In single mode, players take control of Ryu, and in versus mode, the second player takes control of Ken. Computer controlled characters include Sagat, Adon, Gen, and Geki.
