Street Fighter II includes many improvements on the original game. For the first time in the Street Fighter series, Street Fighter II offered multiple playable characters, each with their own unique fighting style and moves.

Players select from one of 8 characters - Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, E Honda, Guile, Zangief and Blanka - and can play through the single player mode taking on CPU controlled opponents, or choose to go head-to-head against another player.

Other improvements include a greater focus on special moves, the introduction of grabs/throws, and the ability to cancel during an animation by performing another move, allowing for a combination of several basic and special moves.
