Dengeki Bunko and Sega Announce Collaboration Fighting Climax

Dengeki Bunko is best known for publishing popular light novels, such as Sword Art Online and A Certain Magical Index, and now the characters from these popular titles and more are part of a Sega collaboration called Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax.

This two player fighting game allows brawler enthusiasts and fans of the included series to play their favorite characters and battle it out to be the best. It is a 2D fighting game, which will be distributed via Sega's ALL.Net P-ras MULTI system.

The game uses a four button configuration for a Light, Medium and Heavy Attacks and another button to call the support character. The support system is very interesting, and mixes up the gameplay for players. Players simply push the 'S' button to call the support character who releases a special attack before exiting, and requires a 5 second recovery period before the support character can be called again. So really, players get a taste of a second character during battle as well.

Players can also use their Climax gauge, which goes from 1-5 bars, for special attacks such as EX Special Move (which takes up 1 bar) and Climax Arts (which takes up 2 bars). Each character has two Climax Arts moves they can use.

This unique fighter/character crossover involves characters from multiple Dengeki Bunko series, which according to one of the games co-producers, Ryutara Nonaka, is a relatively new feature, "While Dengeki Bunko do have many titles that have been made in to games, there aren't actually too many where you ca play as their characters in an action-style game."

Takaharu Terada, Game Director, agreed adding, "I think I speak for us all when I say 'I want to be able to play as Shana, Asuna, Misaka and Kirino. And 'I want to pull off that move form that title', so that's why we made it into a fighting game."

Playable characters unveiled so far include:

  • Shana from Shakugan no Shana.
  • Asuna from Sword Art Online.
  • Mikoto Misaka from Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index).
  • Kirino Kousaka from Oreimo.
  • Shizuo Heiwajima from Durarara!!, and...
  • Kuroyukihima from Accel World.

And support characters unveiled so far include:

  • Wilhelmina Carmel from Shakugan no Shana.
  • Leafa from Sword Art Online.
  • Toma Kamijou from A Certain Magical Index, and...
  • Ruri "Kuroneko" Goko from Oreimo.

Another interesting aspect of this game is the "dream-like" nature of it and the fact that not all the characters included seem to fit the image of a brawler.

"Dengeki Bunko titles consist of many characters who can fight, but we're thinking about adding characters who don't fit that image, appear in the game," said Nonaka, "It is truly a dream fight, or a dream match-up, if you will."

The arcade release is due during the Japanese Spring 2014. It's doubtful this game will make it out West, but if you are in Japan Spring next year, this is definitely one you need to put on your list to play.
