"i Mode" Subscription Tops 20 Million

The number of subscribers to Japan's NTT DoCoMo i-mode service topped 20 million on March 4, 2001. Currently, 828 companies are providing information services through i-mode including games provided by Sega, Namco, Konami, and Taito.

The growth in subscription is a twelve-fold increase from the 67 firms that were signed on with the service at the time of its launch. In addition, there are about 1,480 official i-mode Web sites including 59 iƒ¿ppli compatible sites along with another 40,053 independent sites.

Japanese arcade manufacturers have been working closing in the area of mobile phone game development with games such as Dance Dance Revolution, Pac Man and Samba De Amigo to be released on the system.
