New Jersey To Strengthen Amusement Ride Standards

New Jersey could soon have the strongest carnival amusement ride safety laws in the USA. All that remains is for Acting Governor Don DeFrancesco to sign a bill given final legislative approval by the state senate.It was an accident in Ocean City two years ago this summer in which a woman and her young daughter were killed which prompted the legislation approved in the state senate.
It would raise fines from $5,000 to $50,000 per violation and hold manufacturers responsible for submitting detailed engineering designs and reporting accidents involving same rides in other states.
The bill's sponsor, Camden County Assemblyman George Guise, says the message is clear:
"If you manufacture a ride and sell a ride in New Jersey it must be a safe ride." The legislation authorizes state investigations of serious accidents and gives the Department of Community Affairs subpoena power over witnesses and documents.
