Following the revelation that The Pokemon Company has filed for a trademark, which mentions NFC figurines, in Europe for Pokken Tournament, the company has officially announced the game will be released on WiiU in Spring 2016.
The Pokémon Company International and Nintendo have officially announced the upcoming release of Pokkén Tournament for the Nintendo Wii U home console, which is currently an arcade game available only in Japan, and will be released worldwide in Spring 2016.
The company has also filed to trademark the game in Europe, and what is interesting followers of Pokken Tournament is the inclusion of NFC (Near field communication) technology-enabled devices. With the news that the gamer will be heading to WiiU, it stands to reason the the NFC device mentioned in the trademark will likely be figurines.
The fighting game was developed in collaboration with BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. who are the producers of TEKKEN, one of the most successful fighting-game franchises in history. Pokkén Tournament brings Pokémon to life in a way never before seen, where Pokémon in battle move in direct response to the player’s actions. The intuitive controls make this fighting game accessible to players of all skill levels, and the stunning visuals emphasize the size and power of each Pokémon.
“Pokkén Tournament combines the best elements of a traditional fighting game with an authentic Pokémon experience,” said J.C. Smith, director of Consumer Marketing at The Pokémon Company International. “Fans will be thrilled to see their favorite Pokémon battle in a whole new way.”
