Another very professionally organised Trade Show by the Terrapin team, AAE Hong Kong show has a very good blend of Amusement, Parks, and related businesses, with the main advantage in the excellent keynote speakers at the conferences.

This year's show for the arcade sector is down from last year with both Wai Lee and Tai Tin (the main distributors in Hong Kong) not displaying their products. However, Sega's new product Beach Spikers was displayed on the Topfull Amusement Company stand and was very well received by the players.

During this week we met with Sega who also told us they are testing Virtua Fighter 4 at the Wai Lee arcade located at Sham Shui Po with the results being excellent. We visited the centre and found a steady stream of 8-10 people watching with the machine being constantly played. For each day, the income is reported as $2000-$2500HK or the equivalent of 400 games per day. Most of the comments from the machine was the high quality of the graphics and sound.

Back to the Trade Show, Chung Tao Trading Co. showed the full range of IGS games, Excellent Comm had the convertor board system and with the main manufacturers not at the Trade Show it was a little disappointing that people could not see latest release products. We found out today that Konami is also testing a gun game (Japanese Title) at a Hong Kong arcade - most people would not know that this and the VF4 were in Hong Kong and manufacturers need to keep showing these games at Trade Shows outside Japan and USA.

For this writer, the true value of the AAE Trade Show is in the conference - most people will walk the floor/booths and leave Hong Kong with only a small amount of what the Trade Show really offers. I was happy to catch the afternoon session titled "Digital Experience" where we heard Disney, Universal Studios and MTV give their thoughts, ideas and impressions on the entertainment industry. These companies are proven success stories and to listen to their concepts and direction gives the visitor confidence to also succeed in the related amusement fields.

MTV shows how they developed websites which generate 30 million page views per week, with Disney and Universal talking about target markets and product development. If you missed this year's conference, try to allocate some time and resources for next year's event and you will not be disappointed.
