Merit Entertainment is assisting operators and distributors in North Carolina by clarifying to officials that Megatouch games are amusement games and not gambling machines. The move comes after the introduction of a new state law which has rendered the possession and operation of all video poker and other video gaming machines illegal.
Bob Fay, Merit's Director of Government Relations, will be traveling to North Carolina next week to educate government officials on the fact that Merit Megatouch games are skill-based games for amusement only. Video poker and other video gaming machines in North Carolina have been phased out since October 2006, with the possession and operation of all such machines now illegal under North Carolina State Law.
"We are concerned by the misconception that because Megatouch units have a touchscreen, and about 20% of its games involve cards, they are perceived to be like the gambling machines you might find in Las Vegas or Atlantic City. That is absolutely not the case," stated Colin Higbie, Merit's Director of Marketing. "All of our games are games of skill, which is why they keep track of players' high scores. The Megatouch has more in common with a classic arcade game or pinball machine than a gambling device," continued Higbie.
Jim Stelzer, Merit's Vice President of Intellectual Property added, "Merit's Megatouch games are not in any way gambling devices. Merit designs its games for amusement only, not for gambling. We have even filed for patents on our unique methods for ensuring that higher scores require greater skill. We have focused our resources on skill-based scoring because we believe that the best players deserve to earn the highest score."
