Sega chairman Dies of Heart Attack

Sega chairman and president Isao Ohkawa has died today following a cardiac arrest. Ohkawa-san was also honorary chairman and founder of the CSK group.

Sega is currently undergoing a major restructuring following the decision to half production of the Dreamcast console and focus on becoming a major third-party developer and publisher for other platforms. Ohkawa-san hit world headlines in February when he donated his 12.5 per cent stake in Sega back to the company along with other private assets totalling 85 billion Yen - nearly half a billion pounds.

Analysts have said that Ohkawa-san's death is unlikely to affect Sega's recovery in the longer term, but that it could cause a shift in the relationship between Sega and CSK group - placing a cloud on the short-term prospects for the company, as Sega is very reliant on financial support from CSK. However, the effect which the death will have on Sega's share price next week is as yet unknown.
