Canadian Wins Classic Video Game World Championship
With ABC-TV (WMUR) on the telephone, hoping to broadcast the news of the final winners in the first-ever Classic Video Game World Championship, its announced that Dwayne Richard has just narrowly edged out Don Hayes.

Playing at the famous Funspot Family Fun Center in Weirs Beach, NH, each contestant was required to attain their highest score on seven different games over the course of four days: May 31-June 3rd. The seven games, all from the classic era 1980-1983, included Donkey Kong, Frogger, Pole Position, Qix, Joust, Robotron and Wizard of Wor. Following the same format used by the classics world championship, the monochrome event featured play on Asteroids, Depthcharge, Sea Wolf, Wheels, Battlezone, Sprint 2 and Space Invaders.

By using a formula that converted each players' scores into percentages, the 80 contestants who participated in the two championships were placed in final standings that rewarded players for high scores. The closer a player's score was to the highest score achieved during the event, the better the player fared in the standings.

Ten new world records were registered during the course of the two contests, including Food Fight (Jon Dworkin 1,036,900 on 5-men setting), Tapper (Greg Erway 1,263,625 on 5-men setting), Scramble (Robert Mruczek 1,147,580); Wheels (962 by both David Nelson and Cameron Feltner); Tutankham (488,780 by Rob Barrett); Wizard of Wor (101,200 by Mark Longridge); Sprint 2 (258 by David Nelson); Carnival (386,750 by Fred Pastore); Sea Wolf (10,800 by Peter Skerritt) and Wonderboy (894,180 by Mark Waterfield).

Robert Mruczek's score on Scramble may warrant a well-deserved asteriks, since he broke the fifteen-year-old world record of 999,990 points while using only three men. The old record was achieved on five men.
