uWink has launched its uWink Players League, a networked league program for the touchscreen game market, making the league "happen" with a fraction of the effort by operators and location owners alike.
"We have pioneered yet another new means of increasing operators' earnings," announced Nolan Bushnell, founder and CEO. "With our robust, versatile network in place, the possibilities are endless. We have a multitude of new features planned for our system over the next few years and firmly believe we can return coin drop to the $22 billion level of the early 80's."
Players register to play at uWink terminals and are then assigned to a division made up of 8 local players. League matches are comprised of 13 games, in various combinations of uWink's most popular games: Bloxx, Elevator, Tri-Elevator, Heaven 11, Bobbles, Kubis and Merry Coupling. All players are given the opportunity to sample 6 of the 7 predetermined games free of charge at the time of registration.
Players pre-pay for their first week of league play and their first week of playoffs, ensuring they are committed for the entire season. After that there is a fee of $5.00 for each match. Registration for the Fall League (October 1 – November 18) began September 3rd and runs until September 23rd. Players compete against other players in their division earning a match point for each win. Match points determine the players' standings in their local divisions and in the playoffs. All players are guaranteed participation in the Fall League playoffs, beginning November 27th.
All Fall League 2001 participants are awarded points toward eligibility to compete in the uWink $62,000 face-to-face uWin tournament in Las Vegas in June 2002. uWink will award cash prizes ranging from $10,000.00 to $400.00 to 64 players at the 2nd annual "Live" tournament. The 2001 tournament hosted 600 players and paid out $25,000.00 in cash prizes.
