Sega Club Kart
Sega Amusements Europe Ltd showcased their new Go-Kart racing game called Club Kart at the ATEI in January. Subsequent to thorough testing in the UK it is now due to be manufactured in a deluxe format in early May. The game is powered by Sega's new impressive Naomi 2 board, which brings unparalleled graphic reality to the game and allows players to experience a real sense of speed and acceleration. Players have a choice of Normal race mode or Championship race where the revolutionary club kart card system can be used.

Club Kart is designed to be fun and exciting for the average game player and realistic enough for the karting enthusiast or the hard core player. Players race a high performance kart through the streets of Piazza Laziale, Cote d' Azur or Andalucia.

Sega Amusements Europe Ltd, Sales Director – Paul Williams commented "The life cycle of recent games has gradually been decreasing, thus reducing the investment efficiency for many operators. Sega believes that there are mainly two reasons for this situation:

1. Once a player achieves the final target to clear the game they will not play again because there is no new target for them to achieve. If the final target is easy to achieve then the game is suitable for the beginner or the occasional video user, but the game is then too easy for the hard core video player.

2. If the final target is too high to achieve then a player may give up after only playing once because the game is too difficult and they get no enjoyment from it.

In order to combat these problems and lengthen the life cycle of the game and raise the level of return on investment, Sega believes that a programmable card system is the best solution as it gives the player multiple ways to enjoy the game in an arcade. We hope that Club Kart will be the first of many memory card games that we will produce"

A card system was introduced for the first time by Sega with the game "Derby Owners Club" , which was well accepted by players in Japan and was a huge success with operators and distributors.

The Club Kart Card system allows players to build a totally unique custom Kart that is personal to them. This information is then stored on a paper credit card with a magnetic strip similar to those issued at car parks. They have a choice of kart colours, frame colours, racing suits, helmets and sponsors to make their kart unique. They then start the race as a novice with other novices created by the CPU. There are 4 races in the novice class to enter. Complete all 4 races in a winning position and the player is offered some sponsorship and can move up to the next level, which is Class B where there are 6 races. Following Class B there is Class A with 8 Races and then Class S with 10 races. The Club Kart Card stores the race information for each race allowing you to improve your performance in each level without having to drop back a level. The card also allows you to build a team with other players. As you improve the player sees their position on the starting grid improve from last to pole position. As the player becomes more experienced then the card stores this information and therefor the card develops a value which players can swap between themselves.

The game is currently available in a deluxe format, although a twin format is planned for later in the year.
