As Sydney's Star City Casino in Australia trys to clean up its image after much publicised indiscetions, new information has come out that staff have pressured and lured gamers into betting well above their means.

Star City has had recent troubles with an inquiry into the actions of the corporation. In a report tabled 3 months ago by Peter McClellan QC to the Casino Control Authority, he warned, "I have concluded that until recently, Star City had developed significant problems in the operation of the Endeavour Room. The corporate culture was inappropriate, and effective procedures were not in place to deal with issues such as prostitution, loan sharking, the service of alchol, money laundering and sexual harrassment".

In a recent report by News Limited, teams of scouts patrol the main regions of the betting areas 24 hours a day to recruit new players for its "high roller" den. It is estimated that $7 Billion is waged in this area (Endeavoour Room), generating about 40% of the casino's total earnings.

Decorated with antiques, art works, paintings with free food and drinks, players are enticed to move away from the main gaming floor to a more up market feel. Working with general staff, the scout is shown potential high rollers who wager at least $50 per bet for long periods of time. They are then enticed upstairs to the high rollers section, and given lavish benefits ranging from grand dinner tickets, concerts and much more. A former director of the high roller room stated, ..to retain your membership, high rollers must bet for at least 30 hours a week at a minimum bet of $100.

As personal experience through a family member explained, it is a very easy trap to fall into. You might have a good run on the tables and begin betting higher than normal. Next thing you are sitting with movie stars and celebrities in the high rollers room given water front accommodation, free meals and air fares. You might win on the first few visits. The nice invitations to premier events keep coming and your ego keeps growing. But sooner or later it catches up to you where the bet is over your head and lose everything.

In an era where the government is running a "bet safe" campaign, maybe a closer look into the art of playing with people's egos for financial gain should occur.
